McConnell Dowell has a long history of designing and constructing marine infrastructure across New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, Australia and South East Asia. In 2017, we were awarded the Australian Infrastructure of the Year Award for the Melbourne, Webb Dock redevelopment.

We are proud to continue this legacy as part of the Wynyard Edge Alliance, alongside Downer, BECA, Tonkin + Taylor, Auckland Council and MBIE. The Alliance was created to design and construct the infrastructure to support the 36th America’s Cup competition in Auckland, New Zealand in 2021. The Project Alliance Agreement has been signed and we’re excited about starting construction activities.

The project involves Wynyard Wharf repairs; an extension to Hobson Wharf; dredging; construction of six breakwaters; public access ways, amenity areas and public realm; installation of floating pontoon structures and foundation pads for five racing syndicate bases.

Construction has commenced with completion of the project expected by early to mid-2020.

McConnell Dowell is pleased to announce that the McConnell Dowell-HEB Joint Venture has been awarded a contract by Watercare to upgrade the Pukekohe WWTP in South Auckland. This award follows the successful completion by the Joint Venture of New Zealand’s largest wastewater upgrade since 2000 at the Mangere wastewater treatment plant.

Similar to the award-winning Mangere BNR WWTP upgrade, this contract includes construction of three reactors, a chemical dosing facility, pump station, inlet works, and associated interconnecting pipework. This upgrade at Pukekohe will allow Watercare to meet the demands of a growing population by doubling the capacity of the plant. It will also improve water quality into the Parker Lane Stream – a tributary of the Waikato River.

2018 Strong Start To 2019 Financial Year

McConnell Dowell is pleased to announce the award to upgrade the busy Mulgoa Road corridor between Union Road and Museum Drive including upgrade of Mulgoa Road intersections with Jane Street and High Street in Penrith.

This Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) project, which is being funded by the Australian and NSW governments, is an important development for the Western Sydney community as on completion it will ease congestion, improve access to public and active transport, and increase road capacity to cater for future growth.

Key elements of the scope include widening of roads, upgrading signalling, building new pedestrian/cycle paths and realigning existing utility services.

A key challenge of the project is widening of the existing rail bridge over Castlereagh Road. Our key success factor in winning the contract was an innovative solution focused on minimising disruption to the community.

By offering a proven, alternative bridge installation method, the company was able to demonstrate clear benefits in program, cost and safety, whilst mitigating risk, reducing rail possessions and increasing confidence in achieving critical project milestones.

In announcing the award, McConnell Dowell’s Managing Director - Jim Frith said the award was a further demonstration of its abilities as the Creative Construction company. He continued…

“We are very pleased to continue our relationship with RMS. This project helps us achieve our objectives of increasing our presence in the NSW and Transport markets. We look forward to meeting and exceeding all of RMS’ objectives and improving the lives of those who live in or travel through this area of Sydney.”

Construction will commence in December 2018 with project completion due in late 2020.

Jane Street Penrith

McConnell Dowell is pleased to announce a new contract to upgrade existing wharf facilities at Webb Dock and Burnie on behalf of Toll. The upgrades are required to allow the wharves to receive a new larger class of vessel procured by Toll to better service the Victorian/ Tasmanian shipping route.

The project award comes after an intense and productive 10-week Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process between the two organisations, focused on developing the best design and delivery solution to ensure the works are completed on-time.

The project will be a complex logistics challenge whereby McConnell Dowell is required to upgrade both terminals concurrently whilst maintaining full operations.

A summary of the scope of work per location is as follows:

Webb Dock

  • Quayside strengthening works including; construction of discrete sheet pile wall, removal of existing pavement, installation of 192 reinforced concrete piles, construction of concrete relieving platform, re-instatement of pavement gravels and asphalt.
  • Construction of two mooring dolphins
  • Construction of new abutment, removal of existing linkspan and installation of new larger linkspan
  • Low/ high voltage electrical upgrades

 Burnie

  • Construction of two abutment dolphins, mooring and berthing dolphins
  • Construction of new abutment, removal of existing linkspan and installation of new larger linkspan
  • Low/ high voltage electrical upgrades

The delivery program is extremely tight and was a focus of the project team throughout the ECI process. McConnell Dowell worked closely with Toll to procure all long lead items throughout this phase, further demonstrating the advantages of this delivery model for complex accelerated projects.

The project will commence immediately and will be completed ready for the new vessels at the end of February 2019.
