We recently completed Phase 1 of the Swanson Dock West Remediation, the fifth project we have delivered for Port of Melbourne since 2017.
Swanson Dock West (SDW) is a critical International Container Terminal comprising of a 944 m wharf with three container-handling berths, which were constructed in several stages between the 1960s and 1980s. The existing wharf is of varying forms of construction and some sections are close to or beyond the typical design life of 30 years. As a result, major remediation was needed.
To maintain port operations during the works, a three-phased program was developed during the Early Contractor Involvement stage, commencing with Berth 1.
Our scope of work included:
- Top Deck Works – removal of reinforced concrete deck, civil earthworks, minor underground services alterations, installation of new steel piles, up to 46 m long, and reinforced concrete plugs. This was followed by full reinforcement, formwork and concrete deck rebuild; full replacement of the ship-to-shore crane rail system; and top deck surface repairs to the existing concrete wharf.
- Front Fender – removal and remediation of the defective concrete wharf faces, wharf furniture removals / upgrade / refurbishment and replacements, and installation of a new cathodic protection system.
- Under Wharf – protection works to existing steel tubular marine piles, cleaning and lining of the existing steel sheet pile wall with FRP panels and various wharf soffit repairs.
This was intricate work and a key to the success of the project was the ongoing and comprehensive engagement with the shipping companies, ensuring that our works didn't impact their operations.
The SDW Remediation Project is part of the Port's 2050 development strategy and all stages are due for completion by 2027. The Port of Melbourne handles one third of the nation's container trade.
