We're upgrading the Queen Sālote International Wharf for the Tongan Ministry of Infrastructure. Nukau'alofa is the country’s main international port and a lifeline for the people of Tonga, with about 98% of the country's imports arriving by sea.
This critical infrastructure upgrade will achieve several objectives, including modernising and climate-proofing the facility, increasing container capacity, and improving overall port operations.
To ensure that the port remained operational with minimal disruption during the construction, we completed the work in three phases, in a mix of marine and onshore work.
Work included:
- constructing a new dolphin between Wharf 1 and 2
- installing two new dolphins on the eastern side of Wharf 1
- the reconstruction of Wharf 1
- building an extension to Wharf 2 to accommodate larger vessels
- new paving, drainage, smart lighting, waste management, and firefighting services.
Most of the work was self-delivered by an amazing team we recruited for this project. Around 80% of the team are locals and 10% are women, fostering upskilling and development and gender equity on the project.
Stage One, the upgrade to Wharf 1, was completed in July 2024. All the stakeholders involved in the project participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the wharf, with the Prime Minister of Tonga, the Honourable Hu’akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, as the guest of honour.
The completion of Stage Two and the remaining scope is on schedule for the end of October 2025.
Below is a video of the ribbon-cutting and the official ceremony for the handover of Stage One.
