McConnell Dowell's Mechanical Division has designed, fabricated and installed a stunning, popular new Jump Platform and saltwater Harbour Pool at the Karanga Plaza Tidal Steps.
The project to improve prime waterfront land and add vibrant public spaces for everyone to enjoy had a high media profile and was eagerly anticipated by Aucklanders. The team understood the high expectations around the project, and led by McConnell Dowell, with lead designers LandLab, structure engineers Novare, and ShoreWise, a marine engineering company, they delivered an outstanding project for Eke Panuku.
Eke Panuku, Priority Location Director: City Centre, Fiona Knox was very positive about the team's performance. “The McConnell Dowell team were super again in terms of working with us through the design, the installation, really tight tolerances, working with other contractors down onsite. We know the team delivered on time and within the budget, which is always amazing to do. So, we really appreciate the team and look forward to working with them in the future.”
They worked together well to deliver an amazing, affordable recreational facility in a busy, complex location, within budget, and in time for summer 2024.
The project followed work the team had completed between 221 and 2022, constructing new seawall balustrades. The project scope includes:
- A new seven-tonne pre-cast concrete jumping platform beside the Tidal Steps.
- Upgrading two tonnes of custom balustrade on the seawall to enhance user safety.
- Installing six 457mm diameter, 12-metre-long piles to secure the
- 200 m2 of marine pontoon that was salvaged, refurbished and extended to act as a hard barrier between swimmers and boats.
- 84 metres of tensile mesh fencing around the new pool.
- Installing grab rails and ladders
- Adding street furniture to form a 'waiting zone' for swimmers.
The worksite was established in late July 2024, and the project was completed with an excellent record, on program, within budget and without a single health and safety or environmental incident.
