Meet Piper our Snells Algies tunnel boring machine

Meet “Piper" she is the latest addition to our taskforce of tunnel boring machines (TBM). Piper has been refurbished from the TBM used on our world record breaking Army Bay ocean outfall project for Watercare. She will carry out a similar Direct Pipe drive through 2km of farmland on the Snells Algies wastewater pipeline and outfall project in Auckland.

Piper was named by enthusiastic students from neighbouring Snells Beach School, the year 3 and 4 students were invited to provide a female designation for the machine in keeping with TBM naming traditions. Pipe-r is a clever play on words and was voted the best name by the children. They also provided painted hand prints to be placed on Piper to “lend her a hand on her journey”.
