In 2025, we completed infrastructure upgrades for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) in Tonga and Samoa, and this year, we are starting projects in Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
In a joint venture with our vertical colleagues, Built Environs, we have been contracted to build new diplomatic facilities in Suva and Port Moresby.
The scope includes:
- infrastructure upgrades, a new chancery and an Official Residence in Suva
- and a new chancery and Representation Space will be built in Port Moresby
Each island has unique requirements and facilities, and the new structures all reflect a culturally inspired, environmentally sustainable design philosophy.
Work is expected to take three years, and wherever possible, McConnell Dowell will hire the workforce, sub-contractors and suppliers locally.
We are committed to reducing environmental impacts and improving broader social outcomes in the Pacific. With smart design, careful planning and community engagement, we will reduce the project’s carbon footprint and repurpose materials to minimise waste to landfill wherever possible.
Our sustainability record in the Pacific includes:
- an 80% local employment rate in Tonga,
- recycling126 T of scrap metal, 2.2 T of soft plastic and 7500 l of waste oil,
- as well as crushing old concrete and using it in rock bags as shore protection.
