The Company is pleased to advise that the Whangarei District Council have awarded McConnell Dowell, in joint venture with Transfield Services, the contract for the construction of a new bridge over the Lower Hatea River in Whangarei, New Zealand.  Procured through an ECI process, the project includes bridge approaches over geotechnically challenging ground and a new 265 metre long Bascule Bridge spanning the River. This is an exciting achievement for the Company as the new bridge will be the first Bascule road bridge to be built in New Zealand in the last 50 years. North Shore City Council awarded McConnell Dowell a design and construction contract for the new Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant Outfall Project in New Zealand. The new outfall will discharge high quality treated effluent from the plant 2.8 km out to sea into the Rangitoto Channel. MacDow's scope of work consists of the design and construction of a 3 km long (2.4 km onshore and 0.6 km offshore) TBM driven, segment lined tunnel with an internal diameter of 2.8 m. The Pike River Coal Mining Company awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construct (D&C) contract for Pike River Coal Mine Project, which is located within the confines of the Paparoa National Park, 46 km east of Greymouth on New Zealand’s South Island. The mine will produce 1 million tonnes of hard coking coal per annum for the next 20 years. McConnell Dowell's works included the construction of a 2.3 km mine access tunnel, associated passing bays and sumps for this landmark project. The New Zealand Contractors Federation has awarded the Hobson’s Bay Sewer Tunnel project the 2009 Environmental Award for Contracts over $10 million.   This achievement recognises the dedication that joint venture partners MacDow and Fletcher have shown to protecting the environment through both design innovation and construction implementation. The use of TBM technology in the delivery of the tunnel allowed a shallow alignment to be selected, reducing pumping requirements and energy demand. This reduction in energy consumption is approximately equivalent to a reduction of 160T of carbon dioxide per annum. The Tahuna Ocean Outfall project in Dunedin, New Zealand was awarded the New Zealand Constructors Federation Award in Category 5 – projects exceeding $20 million – on Friday, 14th of August.The annual awards, which are open to all members of the New Zealand Contractors’ Federation, cover major civil engineering, construction and general contracting projects completed during the past year with judges paying specific attention to excellence in planning, control and quality by project teams.The project, which was completed in May 2009, included construction of a 510 m long tunnel from Tahuna Waste Water Treatment plant 250 m offshore beyond the surf zone. The Company is pleased to advise that McConnell Dowell Constructors Ltd has been confirmed as the preferred tenderer for the Waitaki Bridges Replacement Project for the New Zealand Transport Agency. This project is to be delivered as an early contractor involvement (ECI) contract. The contract is divided into two separable portions, SP2 and SP3. SP2 will involve preparation of a specimen design, negotiation of commercial terms (including price) and contract duration. SP3 involves the completion of the detailed design and physical works. The Company is pleased to advise that McConnell Dowell, in joint venture with Downer EDI, have been confirmed as the preferred tenderer by the New Zealand Transport Agency's (NZTA) for the Christchurch Western Corridor Route Memorial Avenue Intersection upgrade. The project is to be delivered as an early contractor involvement (ECI) contract and forms part of the Christchurch Western Corridor route, connecting the northern and southern Canterbury areas with Christchurch International Airport. The Company is pleased to advise that we were the recipient of multiple Safety and Environmental awards at the recent NZ Contractors’ Federation Awards night in Auckland. The Mechanical business was the Safety winner on the night in the projects under $500,000 category. The Rosedale Outfall project won two safety awards and one environmental award on the night. The project was the joint Safety winner (projects over $10 million) as well as joint winner over all categories. The project was also the joint Environmental winner (projects over $10 million).
