The Company is pleased to announce that VicRoads has awarded McConnell Dowell Constructors (Aust) Pty Ltd the construction contract for the Breakwater Road Redevelopment project.

Breakwater Road is an essential crossing of the Barwon River, carrying around 20,000 vehicles each day. The existing bridge is in a flood plain and when it rains heavily it has to be closed down, forcing traffic through the centre of Geelong and causing delays for drivers. There is also a height restriction with the current intersection which means trucks bigger than 3.7 metres can’t fit under the Melbourne-Warrnambool rail bridge.

The new bridge will be built 12 metres higher than the existing bridge, meaning Breakwater Road will now be able to withstand a one in 20 year flood as well as allow for bigger trucks to travel this route reducing the number of trucks going through Geelong.

The realignment of Breakwater Road will ensure improved and safer transport links, in what is one of Victoria’s fastest growing areas and a primary growth corridor for future urban development in Greater Geelong.

The scope of work includes:

  • Approximately 1.1km new Breakwater Rd Alignment including 654m x 14m wide bridge - 7 x 27m spans, 12 x 33m spans including one span over railway tracks plus a 60m span over Barwon River consisting of 10m cantilevered insitu piers and a 40m precast beam;
  • Box culvert crossing;
  • Reinforced Earth wall;
  • Tie-in roadworks at each end; and
  • Lighting & Traffic Signals.

Mobilisation begins September 2010 with project complete scheduled for mid 2012.

The Project Manager is Ben Henshall.

Congratulations to Ben Henshall, Vito Trantino, Florin Olteanu, Nishantha Sethu, Rosemary Rice, Chris Powers, Brenton Davey and all others involved in winning further works from our key client VicRoads.
