Bakewell Underpass Project Wins Engineering Excellence Award

Bakewell Underpass wins second divisional award for Excellence in Infrastructure and Building Projects, this time at the Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Awards.

The Company is pleased to announce that the Bakewell Underpass Project has won the 2008 Engineers Australia Engineering Excellence Awards, South Australian Division, for Excellence in Infrastructure and Building Projects. The awards were announced on Saturday, August 30, at the South Australian Engineers Australia Branch Dinner.

The Excellence Awards recognise the highest level of achievement in the engineering field. They provide peer recognition of outstanding engineering work as well as providing an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the invaluable contribution the engineering profession makes to the community. Each Branch holds State Awards, the winners of which are then in contention for the National Award, to be announced later this year.

The Bakewell Underpass, located in Mile End, Adelaide, South Australia, was an extremely complex engineering and construction project, and one of the first to be delivered by the ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) delivery method in Australia. It involved the replacement of an 80 year old concrete road bridge with a new 5 lane twin deck underpass.

The underpass deck structure accommodates the main suburban and interstate rail lines and a busy commercial road near the edge of the central business district. The most unusual feature of the project was the rail bridge deck, which was designed to be "pushed" into place over a long weekend, minimising disruption to the critical train services.

McConnell Dowell worked with Connell Wagner and the South Australian Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure on this project. Original contract was August 2006 to January, 2008. The project was delivered under the client budget and on time, and was opened by South Australian Premier, Mike Rann, on January 13, 2008.

The Bakewell Underpass Project produced numerous firsts for South Australia and utilised a number of innovativedesign solutions, including soil nail walls, constructing an underpass under five live rail lines and launching the rail bridge into position. This is the second award for the Bakewell Underpass Project. In June it won the CCF Earth Awards, South Australian Division, for Excellence in Civil Construction.
