Auckland International Airport Terminal Development Project

McConnell Dowell Ltd (MCD) won stages two and three of the Auckland Airport’s Terminal Development Project (TDP) in late 2019. The aim of the work was to enable future expansion of the fuel stands, runway and airport terminal. The McConnell Dowell proposal outlined a programme that would enable the team to deliver better safety outcomes, reduce costs and maintain high quality.

The project was completed in two stages:

Fast Facts

  • upgrade to existing DN 450 (18”) buried steel jet fuel pipeline 4.4km long
  • which pumps up to 14,300 litres of fuel per minute to 22 different aircraft stands
  • Installing a new 600m section
  • and civil and mechanical refurbishment to fuel network and valves

Dryandra Road Underpass

The Dryandra Road Works contract was a significant component of the New Parallel Runway (NPR) project for Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC).

The Project involved construction of a 1.5 km long, four-lane reinforced concrete underpass structure, supported on approximately 700 precast concrete piles. The underpass allows vehicular access either side of the new linking taxiways, which were constructed as part of the NPR project.

Fast Facts

  • A workforce of 250 people completed this project
  • Over 450,000 hours, with 1 loss of time injury
  • This project was driven by a workforce made up of 98% local employees
  • It took just 15 month to complete this Runway for the Brisbane Airport Corporation

Pago Pago Airport Runway Overlay

We resurfaced the runway at Pago Pago Airport to improve its condition rating, and raise the shoulder edge by four inches to meet FAA requirements for international airports. Our work included a complete survey of the existing site; construction of Runway 5-23, the shoulder pavement, two taxiway and turning node pavements and paint-marking.

This was our eighth airport project in the Pacific Islands and followed our successful completion of the USD6.7 million rehabilitation and extension of Runway 8-26 in 2007 and the Taxiway Alpha Rehabilitation in 2011.

Fast Facts

  • 18,000 tonnes of asphalt produced in the onsite plant in 6 months
  • 850 tonnes of imported bitumen from Fiji
  • 310,000 litres of diesel has been used to manufacture, transport and deliver the project
  • 17,000 tonnes of crushed aggregate supplied by MCD internal quarry
  • 5,000 m3 of old runway pavement removed
  • Achieved an average PWL Score of 96/100 for Quality compliance

Digital Engineering

Digital Engineering

We take a ‘Digital First’ approach to all our projects, equipping our teams with the latest digital tools and systems from the design stage forward.

This helps them identify and address potential issues at the earliest stages of project development, effectively eliminating issues at their genesis leading to lower costs and delays once we start on site.

On site, we use digital tools like drones for surveying, and GPS tracked plant to monitor and improve safety and efficiency.

Creative Construction

Creative Construction

Creative Construction at McConnell Dowell is the inspired engineering behind the complex infrastructure we deliver.

It's the technical problems and challenges solved behind the scenes by people empowered to think creatively and work collaboratively. It’s the alternative idea or innovation that saves time, reduces cost, makes us safer, and delivers more value.

It might not always be evident when you look at the end product, but it's there, inside every McConnell Dowell project.

Safety

Safety

We never compromise on safety.

We foster our 'Home Without Harm' safety culture through robust processes, effective systems, and by recognising and rewarding safe behaviours.

Our Site Safety Managers are always on our project leadership teams, ensuring safety is prioritised in all site activities. Every team member has clear safety responsibilities, aimed at protecting themselves, their colleagues, and the community.

We're also leading our industry in the adoption of new safety technologies, like virtual reality plant simulators and AI-enabled blind spot elimination. Check out the case studies below for more information.

Underpinning it all are our Safety Golden Rules. Built on our long-term collective knowledge and learnings, they are specifically targeted at preventing fatalities and serious injuries.

Environmental

Environmental

We understand the impact construction can have on our natural ecologies and we're constantly seeking ways to minimise our footprint and restore and improve the natural environment and biodiversity around our works.

We've embraced the circular economy, renewed local ecologies, reconnected habitats, and lowered energy use across our projects in line with our {tip title="Carbon Reduction Roadmap" content="MCD Carbon roadmap 2030"} carbon reduction road-map {/tip}.

We set energy and waste reduction targets on every project and are committed to making our environmental footprint as small as possible, as showcased in the recent case studies below.
