The South Australian Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) awarded McConnell Dowell the design and construction contract for the Glenelg Tram Overpass project in Adelaide, South Australia.
The works include the design and construction of a grade separation for the Glenelg tramline over the very busy South Road in Adelaide. Within the project scope are the erection of all new tram trackwork and overheads; a new elevated tram stop; two lifts; extensive urban design; and temporary tram tracks including a new temporary crossing of South Road at road level while the bridge works are being constructed.
The works also include:
- Installation of two temporary tracks adjacent to the existing alignment to maintain tram services during the construction period;
- A new temp level crossing of South Road controlled by temporary traffic signals also formed part of these works;
- Construction of an eight span bridge over South Road with retained earth approach ramps at each end of the 450 m long bridge;
- An elevated shared use path along the full extent of the new structure which forms part of a future lineal park proposed along the Glenelg tram corridor;
- A tram stop on top of the bridge above South Road, including two lift shafts and stair accesses supported with architectural precast walls and an architectural canopy;
- Plaza area and public space in the bridge undercroft areas including a “kiss and ride” facility;
- New bus indentation bays and bus stops on each side of South Road.
The project forms part of the South Australian Government’s long term traffic management to grade separate the major traffic bottlenecks along South Road.
